Nail Salons Using MMA
The following list of salons has been found to have used a banned substance in their nail product called Methyl Methacrylate Monomer (MMA) which is banned for cosmetology use in Ohio and across the country. Inspectors took samples and had them analyzed by an independent laboratory for the chemical composition of the product being applied to customers. Why is using MMA a problem? There are four main reasons:
MMA nail products do not adhere well to the nail plate. To make these products adhere, nail technicians often shred up (etch) the surface of the nail. This thins the nail plate and makes it weaker.
MMA creates the hardest and most rigid nail enhancements, which makes them very difficult to break. When jammed or caught, the overly filed and thinned natural nail plate will often break before the MMA enhancement, leading to serious nail damage.
MMA is extremely difficult to remove. Since it will not dissolve in product removers, it is usually pried from the nail plate, creating still more damage.
The FDA says don’t use it! This is clearly the most important reason. The FDA bases their prohibition on the large number of consumer complaints resulting from the use of MMA nail enhancements in the late 70’s and they continue to maintain this position today.

Ladies,
This is an article that was in my stylist issue from the State Board of Cosmetology.
They feel that the public needs to know this information but they fail to print it in a public paper for all of you to read, well consider this your personal publication!!
BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU THE CONSUMER TO KNOW!!
YOU ARE THE ONE’S THEY ARE USING THIS PRODUCT ON.
IF YOUR NAIL-TECH WEARS A MASK AND DOES NOT HAVE NAILS ON ASK HER WHY? IF YOU DID NAILS AND LOVED THEM, WOULDN’T YOU HAVE THEM ON. I GUESS NOT IF THEY WERE NOT SAFE.
The majority of these salons are chain salons, some of the salon names on this list are also local. The State Board of Cosmetology has not yet tested salons in our area, but when they do you can rest assured you will never see “ The Nail Place” on this list.
All products used in my salon are safe for you and me. GUARANTEED!!
All of these salons were caught using this illegal product, My question is what did the board do to these salons? This is not a simple little slip up this is deliberate and with no concern to us the consumer it is all about the money. Find the answers ladies call your State Board of Cosmetology and ask them.
